Director’s Note

Appreciation is an attribute we all display at different points in our life. With appreciation being a focal point we have explored the idea of what appreciation can truly mean to a variety of people, in a variety of circumstances. With this in mind, the drama students involved in the Lights Out Theatre Company have written the play, Six Minutes and Thirty Seconds, as a collaborative group.  As we went through the process of writing this show we shared many situations that would cause people to feel acute gratitude, most of which, we found, relied on deprivation. As the play began to take shape, I speak for everyone when I say, we were collectively impressed by the ability of our peers to take on dramatic roles and technical aspects of the show. When we began the development of our show, I had no idea what a real impact it would have on my life. I have found I now make an effort to appreciate things as in depth as I possibly can. I cannot even begin to express my gratitude toward all of the wonderful people who have worked so hard to put this show together, it is an honor to have worked on the process to produce this piece. - Mataya Mikuliak, grade 12 student

Facilitator’s Note

Thanks for your interest in our show, we hope that you come to see it this week!  We appreciate your support of high school theatre in the Lethbridge area.  It is because of that support that my students were willing to take a risk and write an original play.  What you will see has been completely devised, written and directed by the students of Chinook High School.  As a facilitator, I taught them the process, and checked in every once in a while to remind them that their possibilities are limitless!  Everything else was all them!  It’s been nothing short of magical watching these students go through this process.  Watching them grow as artists, watching them get excited, struggle, then eventually find success has been very fulfilling as an educator.  I’m tremendously proud that this next generation of young people will leave high school empowered with the knowledge that not only can they do theatre, they can create original theatre. 

All of this would not have been possible without the love and support of all our family and friends.  We acknowledge and appreciate the time they sacrificed and all of their emotional support, which enabled us to create this play. Thank you all and enjoy the show!  -Duane
