Information for In-Coming Grade 9 Students: How to Select Electives

Transitioning into Grade 9 is an exciting milestone—and with that comes your first opportunity to choose electives that match your interests and help shape your high school journey.

At Chinook High School, every Grade 9 student will take four elective courses, alongside mandatory classes like English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education.

To help prepare for registration, we’ve broken down the process so you and your family can navigate elective selection with confidence.

Where to Select Electives
Elective selection happens through PowerSchool using the parent/guardian account (the same account used to view report cards or complete school registration).
If you don’t have access to PowerSchool, contact your current school’s front office for help.
Once logged into PowerSchool:

1. Select your student’s name.
2. Click Course Requests on the left-hand side.

This will bring you to the Chinook High School registration screen, where you’ll see five main sections:
  • Music Courses
  • Foods/Construction
  • Grade 9 Electives
  • Grade 9 Alternate Electives
How to Choose Your Electives
You are required to:
  • Choose 4 primary electives (worth 1 credit each)
  • Choose 6 alternate electives (in case your top choices are unavailable)
Some courses like Band and Choir are worth 2 credits because they run for two quarters. If you select one of these, it will count as two elective spots. Other options, like Guitar or Rock & Pop, are worth 1 credit and take one elective block.
You may only select one of either Foods or Construction as these are high-demand courses for Grade 9. Don’t worry—if you don’t take one this year, you can still take it in Grade 10.
When reviewing options:
  • Click the pencil icon to view course descriptions and select courses.
  • Check all tabs/pages to see the full range of electives available.
After selecting your top four, move on to choose six alternates. These are important—if one of your primary picks is full, an alternate will be assigned.
Submitting Your Choices
Once all courses are selected:
  • Scroll down and press Submit
  • A confirmation screen will appear showing all your choices.
  • You can go back and edit your selections anytime before the elective selection window closes.
Note: Elective selection is not first-come, first-served. Take your time reviewing all options before the deadline.
